The NSBA is a voluntary association and registered charity, working for young musicians and their teachers in primary and secondary, state and independent schools, local music support services and youth organisations.

Its influence extends throughout the United Kingdom.

The central aim of the NSBA is to further the musical education of all young people by promoting the playing of brass and woodwind instruments in schools, colleges and communities. All of this is coordinated by an Executive Committee of practising teachers and musicians. The Association achieves its aims by promoting music in several ways including;

  1. the formation of bands and smaller ensembles.

  2. the generation of new music (including commissions) for bands, ensembles and individual players.

  3. the dissemination of information and training opportunities for teachers and others concerned with the education and development of young musicians.

  4. the bringing together of young musicians for festivals, inter-school and community events and activities under expert tuition.

  5. liaison with other appropriate organisations to ensure access and opportunity for young people with disabilities.
